Marcus Brigstocke presents Unavailable For Comment
Underbelly, Bristo Square 31st July – 24th August at 2.40pm
Making its debut at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe is a brand new topical improv show presented by Marcus Brigstocke. ’Unavailable For Comment’ will be performed daily throughout the Fringe at the Underbelly in Bristo Square at 2.40pm.
Top comedy guests will be forced to answer for every failing in today’s society. Marcus' guests won't know who they are or what mistakes they'll be asked to defend until their Paxman-esque host makes it clear... Just like real guests on Newsnight and Question Time - they will have to improvise / bullshit their way out of trouble and they won’t be released until they do. Imagine the most toe-curling interviews you've ever seen on TV. Live, improvised, outrageous, libellous and utterly hilarious. Book early!
Boris Johnson speared through the chest by Eddie Mair…Michael Howard thrown to the lions by Jeremy Paxman…George Entwhistle crushed beneath John Humphries’ chariot of truth…Richard Nixon armed with a small net, beheaded by David Frost... What is it about seeing serious people destroyed in the public arena?
Every week we watch our political masters crumble before the best of television’s heavyweight journalists on Newsnight, Question Time and Loose Women. If you’ve ever had the feeling that the people on these programs are just making it up as they go along, you’re right. They have to. They don’t know what they’re going to be asked. They can’t switch sides or back down. They can’t stop and they can never say ‘I’m sorry I don’t know the answer to that, please can I go home now?’
In ‘Unavailable For Comment’ Marcus will attempt to unravel his comedy guests in the same way. Just like Newsnight, the host knows what he’s talking about and none of his guests do. Marcus' guests won't know who they're playing or what mistakes they'll be asked to defend or conceal until their host makes it clear – often with hilarious and surprising outcomes. Not to be missed!

Little Howard is the world’s only live interactive animation. He’s won so many awards and fantastic reviews and he’s only just celebrated his 6th birthday (for the tenth year in a row)! He’s also a published author and has done lots of television stuff, like The Royal Variety Performance, The Slammer (CBBC) and Little Howard’s Big Question (BBC1) – yes, he’s even had his own television show!
Yet Little Howard is true to his roots and live theatre is still his first love. But life is tough in showbiz; Little Howard’s big new act keeps going wrong, Roger The Pigeon has spent all their money on cookie cutters, his comedy counterpart Big Howard has been diagnosed with being clinically unfunny and there’s a slug in the backstage toilet. And it’s about to get worse: a sinister figure arrives and Big Howard and Little Howard have to put on the best show of their lives to keep themselves out of jail! And so, this August, they will be returning to the Fringe with one of the most unique family comedy shows ever.
Little Howard is the creation of Howard Read and together they have enjoyed a nomination for the prestigious Perrier Award, three smash hit series of their acclaimed BBC1 show Little Howard's Big Question, interviews together on This Morning (ITV1) and Radio 1, published two books (Little Howard’s Unpleasant Lullaby and Little Howard’s Big Book), performed for the Queen and toured all over the world together. When Little Howard has gone to bed, Big Howard has been busy creating critically acclaimed characters on TV and radio for the likes of Richard Briers, Rik Mayall, Mark Gattis, Una Stubbs, Rula Lenska and Tim Brooke-Taylor. He has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and various programmes on Radio 4 and animated on several tours for Ross Noble. Oh, and he’ll also be at the Fringe in his own show, Hide and Speak, but Little Howard doesn’t know that yet…

Ben Van der Velde's Chain Letter
Venue: Underbelly Bristo Square – Clover
Time: 4.10pm
Dates: 3rd -25th August (except 12th)
Previews: 31st July – 2nd August
Ben Van Der Velde debuts his hour show at this year’s Edinburgh Festival with a show titled ‘Chain Letter’ at the Underbelly’s Bristo Square Clover Room. Overwhelmed by the quick-fire world of texting and social media, Ben decided to re-discover the lost art of letter writing and start his own chain letter, but not one of those annoying passive-aggressive ones. This letter was five foot six, had curly hair and called Ben. Four letters were dispatched to long lost friends and Ben followed their trails. Find out what happened next... (P&P Not included)
As one of the UK circuit's most promising acts, Ben Van der Velde seamlessly engages with every audience, creating an enthused energy with his absurd takes on everyday life. Playful and quick-witted, he delivers his collection of ridiculous tales from Goth fishing to waxing Stuart Little, there is no subject too daft for Ben’s radar! Mixing his invention with trademark off-the-cuff interaction, ‘Chain Letter’ showcases Ben’s talent for blending storytelling and well-researched anecdotes in the vein of Dave Gorman and Chris Addison.
Ben’s first foray into comedy was back in the warm-hearted, frozen-toed wastelands of Newcastle, showing off his skills as a character actor in his primary school’s production of Snow White and the Seventeen Dwarves, playing dwarves 12-16 (Grumpy, Clumsy, Yuppy and Woozy.) Twenty years on he still struggles to shake off at least two of those titles. He first came to the Edinburgh Festival as a founder member of the acclaimed Oxford Imps, spinning nonsense yarns with other Imp alumni such as Robin & Partridge and Rachel Parris. In 2008 Ben graduated from the Central School of Speech and Drama, leading him to work with the likes of the West Yorkshire Playhouse and exciting new company Parrot {in the} Tank, as well as starring in a short film which was a finalist in the Straight 8 film competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 2011 Ben was named Comedy Cafe New Act of the Year and subsequently garnered coveted hosting roles in 2012 that included the Big Value Comedy Showcase shows at the Edinburgh Festival and the comedy tents at both Bestival and Festival No.6.
Ben is a regular circuit MC having also delivered his skilful wit for Really Lovely Comedy and the Free Beer Show where he has compered for top acts such as Omid Djalili, Reginal.D.Hunter, Sarah Millican, Tom Stade, Brendon Burns, Jim Jefferies and Andrew Maxwell, making him one of the most sought after hosts on the circuit.
CRITICAL PRAISE FOR BEN VAN DER VELDE:
“…Highly promising” TIME OUT
“…a sharp and crafty gagsmith, with wittily obtuse takes on an impressively wide range of topics bringing flair and confidence to them all.” CHORTLE
"…exquisite comic timing...wonderfully clownish physical comedy." BRITISH THEATRE GUIDE
"a stunningly quick wit." SPOONFED

Hailed by critics and comics alike as one of the UK’s greatest and most original joke writers, Benny Boot’s unique style and unconventional comedic delivery proved irresistible to Fringe-goers and he sold out every single seat during his month run at last year’s Fringe.
This year, Benny pre-empts his imminent fame by recording a live one-hour TV special from the 2013 Edinburgh Festival. He has a producer, he has a venue, and he now has access to the latest hi-tech equipment available in the TV industry. The cameras will be at the ready and the networks will be fighting over the rights to own the next Michael McIntyre as Benny delivers another highly original hour of cleverly-crafted jokes and continues to blur the line between reality and hyper-reality.
Benny stormed the Altitude Comedy Festival in 2012 and 2013 and was instantly branded the next ‘comic’s comic’. His peers became his fans and the likes of Tim Minchin, Jimmy Carr, Andrew Maxwell, Marcus Brigstock and Terry Alderton are all now firmly part of Benny’s ever-growing fan club.
A stalwart performer at many of the major comedy festivals around the world, Australian born Benny’s debut Edinburgh solo show, Set Up, Punchline, Pause For Laughter, deconstructed the comedians’ performance. Benny was a UK finalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing and recently performed on Dave's One Night Stand. And, of course, he will soon have a one-hour TV special to his name.

Andrew Maxwell: Banana Kingdom

31st July to 26th August (not 12th)

"One of the most significant comedians working in the country today" ***** The Independent
Double-Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee and Festival favourite Andrew Maxwell returns to this year’s Edinburgh Festival with his brand new show Banana Kingdom featuring his fearlessly intelligent array of topical observations, delivered in his animated and inclusive style.
"Fiercely funny and utterly invigorating” The Times
As well as his continued dominance on the live circuit, Andrew is currently working on Public Enemies for BBC Radio 4, which will transmit this Autumn. It’s a series of challenging stand-up shows where he uses his trademark intelligence and political incisiveness to dig behind the clichés and assumptions about four 'slow news' bugbears that are vilified and consumed with equal vigour in British society: Nationalism, The Internet, Drugs and The Food Industry.
Last September Andrew presented an extremely well received documentary for BBC3, Conspiracy Coach Trip (Renegade Pictures), which focussed on the 7/7 Bombings, Creationism and UFOs.
Andrew also recently starred in Sky’s John Bishop’s Only Joking, BBC’s Live At The Apollo, Dave’s One Night Stand and he hosted BBC3’s Live Edinburgh Comedy Marathon. Andrew has also appeared on Have I Got News For You, Mock The Week and Celebrity Juice, as well as Radio shows including: Radio 4’s News Quiz, It’s Not What You know… and Dilemma.
"Stand up. is rarely this politically well-informed or thought-provoking"

Fringe Legend multi award-winning, Perrier-nominated comedian, author, explorer and extreme unusualist, Tim FitzHigham, is back in a brand new show. This year he will be bespoke speaking about his most mystifying challenge to date.
The Spirit of the Fringe award winner’s previous missions and brilliantly bad ideas have seen him paddle the Thames in a paper boat, row the Channel in a bathtub, live a year as a medieval knight errant, vigorously explore the Kama Sutra, Morris Dance from London to Norwich, take inflatables down Olympic black skiing runs, paddle logs up the Amazon and generally re-create the world's weirdest wagers. His unswerving devotion to his bad ideas and the shows they create has seen him fracture a couple of fingers and a toe (twice), break a rib, re-mortgage his house, contract a flesh eating microbe, collapse of dehydration, be blinded in one eye for six months, spend several nights with the Leith Police, survive minor concussion and be hospitalised with a bone-marrow eating infection among a further catalogue of injuries and stunning disasters. No one chases the punch-line to a story this hard.
Tim’s much-loved 2011 show Gambler went on to sell out at the Melbourne and Adelaide Comedy Festivals in Australia, a sell-out tour of Switzerland and Radio 4 aired a pilot of the show in February this year. His CBBC programme Super Human Challenge aired from January this year and took him from Iceland to LA to Dubai, seeing him climb the outside of the Doha Torch building in Qatar, run across Death Valley, pull a double decker bus full of rugby teams, swim with Sharks, get frostbite running across Europe’s largest ice cap bare foot and in nothing but his pants, attempt to catch arrows, balance on chairs on the edge of the Grand Canyon and make the astonishing discovery that Tim has the highest resting tolerance to G-Force ever measured.
Add to this his two rather bizarre World Records, the fact that he is a Freeman of London, a Freeman of the Company of Watermen and Lightermen of the River Thames, the Commodore of Sudbury Quay, the Pittance of Selby Town, Waterman to the Mayor, Unitary Authority of Swindon and has a toilet named after him, and that pretty much sums up why he is so amazing live (and so amazingly still alive).
Tim will also be appearing in the perennial hit of the festival fringe, award-winning Flanders and Swann, which is back this year for one week only!

A cult figure in his native Canada, 2013 newcomer Terry Clement tackles comedy from a psychedelic distance, combining elements of surrealism, dada, and old school humour methods. His uncompromising style pushes the boundaries of reality, taste and humour in this highly original hour of progressive comedy, which is as much a theatrical presentation as it is a stand-up show.
It is difficult to describe on a press release exactly what Terry does. Alternative? Yes. A mixture of psychedelic performance art and Blue Collar observations strained through a Picasso filter and rolled onto a Gysin Canvas.? Perhaps. Din Times 8 is at times scary, silly and almost always hallucinatory, transcending traditional thinking and pricking the audience's sense of reality.
Though this is his first ever appearance at the Edinburgh Festival, Terry has performed at various festivals including the Cape Town Comedy Festival in South Africa and the countless Music Festivals, as well as appearing on The World Stands Up (Comedy Central). He was also nominated for the Canadian Comedy Award and a COCA Comedy Artist of the year award.

Glenn Wool: This Road Has Tolls
ASSEMBLY ROOMS – GEORGE SQUARE
9.50pm (Ends 10.50pm)
31st July – 26th AUGUST 2011 (not 12th or 19th)
Fringe Favourite Glenn Wool is back in Edinburgh this August with a brand new show This Road Has Tolls. Premiering at his favourite festival, this show will be Glenn at his best.
“Another year, another lap around the world for this tetherless vagabond. When people ask me what it’s like, living a life on the road, I tell them, it’s a wonderful way to spend your mid-20s, while my driver’s license ruefully reminds me that I'm in my late 30s. I don't regret my decisions but I will say that even Google Maps will warn you, when you type my average year’s travel into their engine, that This Road has Tolls.”
A whole bunch of fresh tales from this comedic nomad as he continues to be a truly international comedian are guaranteed to be hilarious and leave you looking at your own travel experiences in a whole new light.
What the papers say about Glenn Wool
"One of the best hours of comedy I have ever seen" The Scotsman
"When you watch Glenn Wool, you realise the heights that a talented performer can reach simply by standing on stage and telling stories. This is an un-missable show from a master of the craft" The Arts Desk
"Wool remains one of the most smart, charming, blazingly theatrical storytellers around" Daily Telegraph
"Wool's new show is a masterpiece of comedy, which will have the audience helpless with laughter" The Scotsman

In 2012, Felicity Ward stole the hearts and the stars of the critics with her deeply personal but hilarious show The Hedgehog Dilemma. The critical acclaim arrived en mass and the outstanding reviews rolled in from start to finish.
But amongst the accolades, the self-congratulations and the tearstained Angus beef burgers, she realised that when it comes down to it, this is still a ridiculous job. Who else gets a round of applause before they even walk into their office? Who makes people pay for them before they’ve started work? Comedians! That’s who. In this straight-up stand-up show, she takes you through big intros, autotune, her love for junkies, the butchering of language, anxiety attacks, holding a duck and big finishes. She's putting her cards on the table and her dick on her sleeve. Is that how the saying goes?
First seen on the Australian comedy scene in 2005 in Ten Network’s popular sketch show The Ronnie Johns Half Hour, Felicity has since gone on to become one of Down-Under’s favourite funny people, appearing in ABC’s prominent music comedy quiz show Spicks and Specks, Thank God You’re Here (Channel 7), Good News Week (Channel Ten), and has her own stand-up comedy special as part of ABC2’s Warehouse Comedy. In 2008, she won Best Newcomer for the Melbourne Airport Award and has since been reeling in awards and nominations. 2012 was her year, with The Hedgehog Dilemma receiving a nomination, if not the award, at every major Australian festival.
She has toured internationally from London to LA to Hong Kong to Singapore, and last year co-starred in Working Dog Productions’ (the makers of The Castle and The Dish) Australian comedy feature film Any Questions For Ben? In her brief time in the UK last year she appeared on Russell Howard's Good News (BBC) and from the Edinburgh Fringe was invited to perform The Hedgehog Dilemma in LA at the Hollywood Improv. Since then, she’s appeared at many of her prestigious family barbeques.

One of the Fringe’s most insightful comics, Keith Farnan, returns to the festival after a year off, this time exploring Fear Itself, a rather appropriate theme for many people involved in Edinburgh…
The world is fuelled by fear. Global fears; plague, war, asteroids, a robot uprising. Everyday fears; dying, meaninglessness, random violence, spiders. In all this, the key ingredient is uncertainty. Dithering leaders do not instil confidence. The indecision of a doctor does not inspire hope. Wavering lovers fail to arouse joy. But despite our days being filled with worries we continue to function and, without this uncertainty and fear, there is no love, there are no triumphs. There is nothing worthy without fear. Dammit.
Franklin D. Roosevelt once said we have nothing to fear but fear itself, and then America dropped two nuclear bombs on a civilian population creating quite an addendum to the list of things to be frightened of. Nowadays, the world doesn’t need North Korea to throw a tantrum to be afraid. People can be terrified all on their own, especially if they have a fear of loneliness. However, there are some who are willing to do whatever it takes to overcome fear and embrace uncertainty. Then, there are others who attempt to make a living out of both. Keith Farnan is the latter.
Irish born and bred Keith Farnan’s solo shows have always been extremely thought-provoking, be it about sex traffic, racism, the Death Penalty or the economy, and each show has gone on to sell out to critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Festival as well as London’s Soho Theatre and the Royal Festival Hall.
Keith has appeared on Michael McIntyre ‘s Comedy Roadshow (BBC), One Night Stand (BBC), Live from Amsterdam (Showtime), Montreal’s Just For Laughs , and presented his own comedy documentary for RTE, Money, Money, Money: Keith Farnan versus the Economy. He has featured on a variety of radio shows including Loose Ends (Radio 4), The Guessing Game with Clive Anderson (BBC Scotland) and Colin Murphy’s Great Unanswered Questions (BBCNI). He was writer of one of the Irish Times Tiny Plays and received a commission to write his own play, The Last Stevedore. He has also written for Time Out London, Hot Press and The Irish Post.

Pete Cain: Everybody Out
VENUE: The Assembly Rooms, 54 George Street, EH2 2LR
TIME: 10.15pm
DATES & PRICES: Previews: 1st-2nd August @ £9 / £8
3rd-11th, 13th-25th August @ £10 / £9

The UK has an immigration problem; the infrastructure clearly cannot cope with the amount of people that are here, and to make the situation worse the government admit they don’t actually know how many people are in the country because they stopped counting them in & out years ago. But fear not! Pete Cain has a brilliant solution to this and all our other social, economic & political problems.
This August, Pete Cain, one of our most thought-provoking comics, is advocating kicking Everybody Out of the country so they can be counted back in. However, not everyone will be allowed back in. His new immigration policy stipulates that only “nice people” will be re-admitted. Colour, creed, race and religion are irrelevant; you’ve just got to be nice. Bankers, politicians and other criminals needn’t bother applying. Pete is aiming to make Britain “Great” by building a utopian society for the people and not the ruling classes.
This brand new show is an intelligent, light-hearted look at the UK’s immigration policy through the eyes of a wickedly funny, incorrectly political, radically reasonable, cynically seasoned stand-up.
Pete Cain has been performing on the UK comedy circuit for 10 years and supported Jim Jefferies’ 2010/11 UK tours. In 2009 he co-wrote, produced & directed the cult sketch show “No Signal” for the FX channel. He’s also won a multitude of awards during his time working as a senior copywriter in a number of London’s top advertising agencies. He’s a nice bloke too.
