AND THE CUBAN BROTHERS
JIM JEFFERIES is one of the most sought after comics on the world stage. His shockingly charming style has won him an army of fans at instant sell out headline shows across the globe. Repeatedly one of the most popular acts at the Edinburgh Festival, in 2012 he wowed audiences with a month long, sold-out run of his critically acclaimed, smash-hit new solo show ‘Hammered’. JEFFERIES gets away with jokes most comedians wouldn't touch due to his ability to both charm and offend the crowd in equal measure. His headline appearance at RockNess is one of only two British gigs in 2013 – AND THE ONLY ONE IN SCOTLAND - so fans can expect a barnstorming landing at Dores!
A born performer, DYLAN MORAN is an Irish stand up comedian known for his unique brand of sardonic, observational wit. Deliriously offbeat, with the finest one liners executed with killer timing you’re likely to hear, his sets never fail to tantalise. MORAN’s Channel 4 sitcom ‘Black Books’ won him two Baftas, his work on zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead garnered critical acclaim, and at the age of 24 he was the youngest person to have won the prestigious Perrier Award. DYLAN MORAN headlines this year’s RockNess with JIM JEFFERIES… and we couldn’t be happier.
Also keeping us joyful is Scotland’s fastest rising comic prodigy DANIEL SLOSS. Half-man-half-Xbox, the twenty two year-old started doing stand-up aged just 16. Three sold-out Edinburgh Fringe seasons, appearances on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Rob Brydon Show, Jason Manford’s Comedy Rocks and Mock the Week plus his own BBC show The Adventures of Daniel followed - all before he started to shave. And the rollercoaster keeps on going - a 50 date UK tour under his belt, stand up DVD, supplying Frankie Boyle with material…RockNess is delighted to welcome the self deprecating and unstoppable star-in-the-making back to the festival.
Like a comedic Kalashnikov, DES CLARKE’s sets are a blistering cacophony of comic neurosis, astonishing humour delivered with an energetic scattergun style. A clutch of awards and countless TV appearances bear testament to his genius wit, also heard each morning across the Capital Breakfast airwaves as he stirs the nation. RockNess simply wouldn’t be complete without CLARKE’s brilliant observations, which have entertained audiences at the New York, Adelaide, Dubai and Dublin Comedy Festivals. Welcome back Des!
JANEY GODLEY is a “f**king great comedian” (Billy Connolly, 2012) and “the most outspoken female stand-up in Britain” (Telegraph). Bawdy language and hard hitting home truths are seeing to that. A now legendary upbringing in Glasgow’s East End (married at 18 into a gangster family, 14 years running the infamous Calton Bar, giving Jerry Sadowitz his first ever gig…), there are no areas unexplored in GODLEY’s fearless repertoire. Also a best selling author – her autobiography ‘Handstands in the Dark’ documents her abuse as a child, the murder of her mother and the plague of heroin in 80s Glasgow – JANEY GODLEY is peerless and her debut RockNess appearance unmissable.
Expect blistering, unadulterated material which pushes dangerously near the boundaries of good taste from one of Scotland’s true comedy gems, MARK NELSON. Winner of the inaugural Scottish Comedian of the Year and with a sold out Fringe debut, NELSON’s gritty, no nonsense performances come strongly recommended. ‘Nelson possesses a talent that’s simply obscene… a star in the making’ (LIST).
THE REVEREND OBADIAH STEPPENWOLFE III - the alter ego of Jim Muir - is a one man tornado, a fount of masterfully timed, pitch-perfect jokes that flout the very laws of censure. He once was lost but now he's saved, explains the bearded, shade-wearing, white-smocked Obadiah, in a Southern preacher's drawl. In his moments of temptation, Obadiah asks himself what would Charlie Sheen do? Channelling the spirit of every crazed hick who ever found God – the hard-drinking, spouse-abusing, morally bankrupt Reverend grinds all the usual subjects (sex, drugs, religion, porn). Howlingly funny.
If there’s a rabble that needs roused, ALAN ANDERSON is the comic of choice. One of Scotland’s top comperes, he has shared a stage with Johnny Vegas, Peter Kay and Jimmy Carr, annually hosts the heats of the Scottish Comedian of the Year, and most match days can be found hosting gigs in the nation’s main sporting grounds. ALLAN J PARK is one of the hottest talents doing the Scottish comedy circuit. His mantra is “an education does not make you rich…making money does”, something that looks increasingly likely given his starry ascent. ANNA DEVITT gave up her 9-5 to pursue her comedy dreams, a decision well made. Her sets deliver fast paced material, peppered with higher-than-average cheap jokes (her admission) but offset by supremely elegant wordplay she weaves into her routines.
Recently announcing her return to comedy after a 11 year hiatus, ASHLEY GODLEY’s tales of Glasgow history include delights as “lug pinning at the Tron, the popularity of public hangings, and gossipy bitches being dragged through the streets by the tongue”. Daughter of JANEY GODLEY – check out their popular podcasts – expectations are high for ASHLEY’s set, another exciting RockNess debut.
BILLY KIRKWOOD, the Ayrshire born ‘comedy fizz bomb’ is a must see with a massive cult following. His surreal style of storytelling and near non existent attention span is unspeakably juvenile and undeniably funny. One third of the Bratchpiece family (that was dad until he retired last year, David aka Bratchy and Neil), BRATCHY’s musings on sibling rivalry, nicked bog roll and hijacked joke make him a regular at the excellent Glasgow Comedy Festival, as well as at RockNess.
There’s definitely something about Chris at this year’s festival with not one but three. Winner of the King Kong competition at the Comedy Store in 2010 followed by a support set for Tom Stade (“Chris is a funny, funny guy…am laughing now just thinking about his big stupid face” Tom Stade), CHRIS CONROY has “audiences laughing and cringing with just about the right intensity” (The Skinny). Next up, a regular act and also compere at Scotland’s legendary The Stand Comedy Clubs, as well as producing a night for Glasgow venue The Fun Junkies, CHRIS FORBES is a member of acclaimed Scottish Sketch group ‘How Do I Get Up There?’ and has also supported Phil Nichol, Daniel Sloss and Des Clarke. Completing the Chris trio, CHRIS HENRY started his joke telling career after performing song and dance shows in the holiday industry for six years (took him that long to figure out he couldn’t sing or dance). Now this loveable rogue can be found sharing his bizarre, eccentric and occasionally shocking tales – not of the variety for the dinner table - at the UK’s biggest comedy venues. Expect a routine leaner than Brad Pitt’s six pack.
In most walks of life it’s an insult to call someone a ‘bug eyed nerd’ but for DAN PETHERBRIDGE aesthetic characteristics are an asset. Only 18 but with a writing skill far beyond his tender years , this wickedly funny new talent is definitely one to watch. Another shining young star breaking through the Scottish comedy circuit, DAVEY CONNOR is 'one of the best upcoming Scottish comedians' (List) who 'hits the nail on the head' (The Herald)
A foot-stompin', chicken eatin', goddamn son of a serial killer, comedy bluesman DOGSHIT JOHNSON debuts his six string philosophies at this year’s RockNess. Catch the dungaree-clad, bearded troubadour up close and personal while you still can. Joining him, EDDIE CASSIDY’s rock solid comedy stacks funny line upon funny line as he builds to room killing punchlines. Eddie is one quarter of the Raw Natural Talent comedy collective and a regular contributor to iTunes top ten ScottishComedyFC podcast.
Next up, a comedian we are beyond excited about welcoming to RockNess…the inaptly named GARY LITTLE. A post graduate of the University of Hard Knocks, Glaswegian LITTLE’s humour is in-yer-face, honest and refreshing with a wealth of material derived from a life lived to the full! Arrive early for what will be a 100% guaranteed full house, and prepare for a bombastic, side splitting set from this ‘born raconteur’ (Scotsman).
Winner of Scottish Comedian of the Year 2011, JAMIE DALGLEISH paints a comical picture of Glasgow, merging anecdote and observation with a healthy dose of congeniality. A committed atheist, his material on religion and its defects is delivered with drollness and reserve. A solid and shrewd performer, Dalgleish is one to watch.
Sunday Mail Champ winner and past Scottish Comedian of the Year winner, JOHN GAVIN is “an assured everybloke eager to decry his emasculation at having to watch Gok Wan and Mamma Mia! yet capable of nailing a cheeky oneliner” (The Scotsman). Want to know what girls really want from a guy? Don’t miss him at the festival. JOHN McGOLDRICK says “I study politics, stack shelves and do stand up. I am rotten at them all.” Clearly has a deprecating sense of humour too – his gigs always have the crowd rolling with laughter. Young Glaswegian scoundrel JOHN WALKER delivers “pure quality banter, no daft themes, just making punters laugh”. He’s one of Scotland’s best up and coming comedians as a result. Check him out and see for yourself.
Canadian JOSH DUNN is a revolutionary force in comedy and never fails to wow with hilarious sets anchored on encounters with women, politics and pretty much every other subject under the sun. JULIA SUTHERLAND does darkly delicious comedy for grown ups. If provocative, potty-mouthed girls with no discernable shame is your thing, then SUTHERLAND won’t disappoint! Happy-go-lucky and loveable, that’s Geordie KAI HUMPHRIES. His monthly shows at Newcastle’s Punch Drunk Comedy have been instant sell outs since the start and his high octane delivery is seeing him rising through the professional comedy ranks.
Another comic destined for lofty heights is MIKEY ADAMS. A string of well reviewed support slots to his credit including appearances at the Glasgow Comedy Festival, Fast rising MC RAY BRADSHAW joins the bill too. Ray is ginger and its caused him some pain. Expect a set peppered with witty one liners. “Funnier than a falcon” as Frankie Boyle said.
RockNess loves SCOTT AGNEW. Tough, funny and original, with a brilliant and distinctively Glaswegian line in creative insults, we are so happy to welcome back Scott for what promises to be another big, burly, barnstorming performance. Unmissable. Also Highlands bound is SCOTT GIBSON, stand up comedian and Glasgow Mad Man. After “playing a sellout show to all my teddy bears at the bottom of my bed, I thought it time to move on to real humans. So far it’s been good, met some nice people, played in some cool venues and to date no one has burst into tears, been sick or tried to stab me. I’m classing that as a pretty good” – “He was ok, I didn’t want to stab him” – The Paisley Bugle. SCOTT CASSIDY & THE BETTER MUSICIANS (Jack and Fisher) are a three piece comedy band from Glasgow. Fuelled by after work drinks (lots of them) the ramblings morphed into songs then progressed into what is now a full scale entertainment extravaganza including sketches and music videos. Expect heaps of audience interaction against colourful subject matter!
STUART MITCHELL swapped a life of banking and fast cars for comedy…an astute move as his hectic gigging schedule proves. As well as studying acting at the RSAMD, Mitchell became an "internet sensation" (Daily Record) after he appeared on Frank Skinner's Opinionated TV show receiving a standing ovation by panel members Patrick Kielty, Sarah Millican and Skinner. Last but certainly by no means least, we are delighted to welcome back NEIL BRATCHPIECE aka THE WEE MAN -the smallest member of the Bratchpiece Family. THE WEE MAN is a pure wee fiend whose stage demeanour ranges wildly from quite threatening to really very threatening indeed. An enthusiastic swinger in his spare time, his favourite TV shows are Crimewatch, Britain’s Dumbest Criminals and Watercolour Challenge and numbers Malcolm X, Ving Rhames and Sandi Toksvig among his heroes.
Music morphs into comedy too this year as VOCAL POINT are confirmed. This faux rap group comprises of MATTHEW WINNING (Finalist in the BBC New Comedy Awards 2012), ‘So You Think You’re Funny’ winner JAMES KIRK and RICHARD GADD (Chortle Student Finalist). Worth checking out for sure as is Scottish Comedian of the Year JELLYBEEN MARTINEZ whose zany Scottish/Latino alter ego is punctuated against jokes, stories, audience participation and a musical backdrop.
And RockNess simply wouldn’t be complete without THE CUBAN BROTHERS. Born of seventies Havana, nurtured on a diet of soulful sexiness and inspired by Cuban mythology, the Cubans have been with RockNess since the start and their humour-laced performances are now the stuff of legend.
Commenting on this year’s comedy at RockNess, Festival Director Jim King said ““The comedy programme has been a brilliant addition to the festival and its gone from strength to strength. We’re really honoured that Jim Jefferies has chosen RockNess as the only gig he’s doing in Scotland this year, and one of only two for the whole of the UK. Dylan Moran will go down a storm too for sure. This is a great announcement of the very best from the Scottish comedy circuit including some really must-see breakthrough acts. The Comedy Arena is going to be the place to grab a drink, kick back and have a few laughs.”
This top notch comedy line up joins a stellar RockNess 2013 bill which so far includes PLAN B, EXAMPLE, BASEMENT JAXX, MADNESS, THE VACCINES, BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB, BEN HOWARD, ELLIE GOULDING, THE MACABEES, JESSIE WARE, ABOVE & BEYOND, MADEON, JULIO BASHMORE, JACKMASTER, STEVE AOKI and MANY MORE plus VERY SPECIAL GUEST FATBOY SLIM.

Altitude Comedy Festival at Snowbombing - April 4th-8th 2011
Moving from its previous location in Meribel, France, Altitude Comedy Festival will be joining forces with Europe’s premier music and snow festival Volvo Snowbombing to host 3 nights of leading comedy and snow-capped capers curated by Andrew Maxwell.
Altitude Comedy Festival will take place in Mayrhofen’s premier new venue, Europahaus featuring cabaret style seated tables with each ticket including a full dinner (drinks not included). Monday and Tuesday’s shows will run from 7pm to 11pm with a late night show running from 9pm to 1am on Wednesday.
With the new festival collaboration expect a world-class line-up of stand-up comedians and performers mixed with typical Volvo Snowbombing surprises to create a truly eclectic mix of madness on the mountain.
Volvo Snowbombing Festival Director Gareth Cooper said: “Just as I thought Snowbombing couldn’t get any funnier, we go and put the Altitude Comedy Festival straight in. This is a great step forward for Snowbombing and we are going to make sure that these comedy nights have more than a touch of the Snowbombing randomness. Don’t expect straight forward stand up, get ready for the utterly ridiculous.”
Volvo Snowbombing, which takes place in Mayrhofen from 4th to 9th April, is an exhilarating week-long whirlwind of brilliant bands and world class DJs which this year includes The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, Pendulum (live), Chase and Status (live), Magnetic Man, Example, Professor Green, Sub Focus (live) and many more making it the largest line-up ever seen in s ski/board resort. Full ticket details and event info for Volvo Snowbombing are available atwww.snowbombing.com.
Mayrhofen is surrounded by the Penken and Ahorn mountains with the 3250m Hinterlux glacier offering year round skiing plus the Vans Penken Park, one of the largest snowboard parks in Europe offering irresistible challenges for snowboarders while for skiers there’s 639km of piste to explore in the Zillertal valley.
With amazing powder skiing and boarding by day in beautiful warm spring conditions and fabulous entertainment by night, Altitude Comedy Festival has become the destination for those who are serious about their winter sports but want their après ski to be riotously entertaining. Hosting both the prestigious elite of comedy and the cream of up-and-coming stand ups, Altitude Comedy Festival is the first chance to check out brand new material from some of the best comedians around before they take it on to the Edinburgh Festival.
Previous Altitude Comedy Festivals have featured global heavyweights of the international comedy circuit including Al Murray (UK), Craig Campbell (Canada), Brendan Burns (Australia), Dave Fulton (USA), Henning When (Germany), Phil Jupitus (UK), Jenny Éclair (UK), Lee Mack (UK), Ed Byrne (Ireland), Omid Djalili (Iran), Phil Kay (UK), Christophe Aleveque (France), Rich Hall (USA) and Ardal O’ Hanlan (Ireland) and a host of other comedians who have notched up numerous Perrier / If awards, Chortle Awards, British Comedy Awards, Bafta’s, Emmy’s and Channel 4’s King Of Comedy award.
